The National Yogurt Association is the most effective trade association representing the interests of the live and active culture yogurt industry before the United States Congress, the federal regulatory agencies and the White House. In addition to communicating the aspects of live and active culture yogurt to key legislative and regulatory officials, NYA monitors and takes action when needed at the federal and state levels on issues of vital importance to the industry. For further information on NYA's legislative efforts, please contact Leslie Sarasin, NYA's President at (703) 821-0770, or via e-mail at lsarasin@affi.com.
In addition to the NYA's public relations efforts, the Association is actively working to revise the Standard of Identity for yogurt. The NYA, on February 18, 2000, submitted a petition regarding a revised Standard of Identity for refrigerated cup yogurt to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to enhance the current yogurt standard, while clarifying that yogurt is a food product containing a minimum level of specific live and active cultures. The petition also clarifies the nomenclature for lowfat, nonfat and full fat yogurts, as well as various other pending unresolved issues in the standard.
